    • Bell Ringer (verbal): How can you tell if a compound is ionic or covalent?

    • Ionic vs. Covalent compounds

      • Ionic compounds have to have at least one element from the left side of the periodic table (other than Hydrogen) and one from the right side of the periodic table

      • Covalent compounds have only elements from the right side of the periodic table (Hydrogen often behaves like a right-side element)

    • Ionic vs. Covalent Assignment - For each of the following pairs of elements, a) write "ionic" or "covalent", b) draw the diagram showing how bonds are formed, c) write the formula for the compound formed, and d) write the name for the compound formed.

      1. Beryllium and Oxygen

      2. Oxygen and Iodine

      3. Nickel (II) and Phosphorus

      4. Nitrogen and Sulfur

      5. Potassium and Sulfurr
