Bell Activity: With a partner, create an analogy to explain elements, compounds, and mixtures to present to the class

    • Chemical Formulas

      • "Recipe" for compounds

      • Tell how many of each type of atom to make a single molecule of a compound

      • Compounds have a set ratio of atom

    • Pure substances and mixtures

      • Elements and compounds are pure substances... all one type of atom or one type of molecule

      • Mixtures are not pure substances... multiple types of atoms and/or molecules

        • Mixtures can be homogeneous or heterogeneous

          • homogeneous - evenly mixed up, such as steak salt, tea, change in a piggy bank

          • heterogeneous - not mixed well, such as a salad, rocks and water, oil and water

        • Mixtures can be mixes of matter in different states

          • Gases and liquids, such as carbonated soda

          • Solids and liquids, such as salt and water

          • Solids and gases, such as Swiss cheese
