Bell activity: What is temperature?

• • How does your body sense temperature?

    • Feel it through your skin

    • How accurate is this? -- cold, warm, and hot water demonstration

  • Temperature - average kinetic energy of the particles in something

    • KE depends on mass and speed

      • Faster moving particles = higher temperature

      • Slower particles = lower temperature

      • Larger particles = higher temperature

      • Smaller particles = lower temperature

  • Thermal Energy - the TOTAL kinetic energy of the particles in something

    • depends on particle speeds

    • depends on number of particles

      • A boiling pot of water has a higher temperature than the ocean

      • The ocean has more thermal energy than the boiling pot of water because there are MANY more particles in the ocean

  • Oobleck Activity

    • Design a ship to travel to planet Oobleck, collect a sample, and return to Earth without getting stuck

  • Due Monday after break; we will present these in class
