Bell Ringer: What is speed?

    • Units in calculations

      • treat units just like variables during calculations

      • units can multiply together, be squared, divide out, etc.

      • Examples:

        • 15 m / 5 sec = 3 m/sec

        • 3 ft x 4 ft = 12 ft^2

        • 25 N / 5 N = 5

    • Speed

      • Rate of movement

      • v = d / t (speed = distance / time)

      • Units for speed: distance unit / time unit or distance unit "per" time unit

        • In SI system, we usually use m/s for speed

      • Speed practice

        • At what speed can you "moonwalk?"

        • How long would it take you to "moonwalk" to the moon (384.4 x 10^6 m)

    • Measuring motion lab

        • measuring and graphing the motion of a bowling ball and a skateboard

        • can be found in the file cabinet or page 12 of your lab book

        • due Thursday
