Bell Ringer: Which changes of state require energy? Which ones release energy?

  • Remind students to turn in their Oobleck projects from last week.

  • Remind students that their folders are due Friday of this week.

  • Inform students that they will be taking a short district assessment today in class over states of matter and changes of state. To review, they will be working in small groups on a few review problems. They will write their group’s questions and answers on an overhead sheet to share with the class.

    • Have students get into groups of 2 or 3 (they usually pick their own groups well, but you can pick for them if need be)

    • Have them write down the questions for their group; you will assign them from the following list based on how many groups there are. Assign all problems listed, giving each group (roughly) the same number of problems. Page 88: 1-5, Page 106: 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 18.

    • Hand out transparencies and markers for the students to use.

    • Have students share their questions and answers with the class once all groups are finished.

  • Have students spread out, then hand out the district assessment. Students may not use books or notes for this assessment, and may not work together. Students should turn this in when finished, then wait quietly for everyone else to finish.
