• • Continue "Sprawling from Grace" video

  • write at least 10 things you learned from the video about problems with urban sprawl

  • Begin chapter 14, section 2 notes - Urban Land Use

    • Urbanization - the movement of people from rural to urban areas

      • The urban crisis

        • When cities grow quickly, population overwhelms the infrastructure

        • Infrastructure - all the things a society builds for public use

        • leads to poor quality water, health care, housing, and transportation

      • Urban Sprawl - rapid expansion of a city into countryside

        • Usually caused by building suburbs outside cities

      • Development on marginal lands - as cities grow, the expand into land not well-suited for building (hills w/land slides in LA, for example)

      • Other impacts of urbanization - city land absorbs more heat from sun, causing rising temperatures and different weather patterns (cities become "heat islands")

    • Urban planning - deciding on how to lay out cities ahead of time to improve efficiency

      • mass transit systems - move groups of people using less energy

      • open space - leave "green belts" in cities to help looks, air quality, and quality of life
