    • Bell ringer (verbal): why do people form connections with other people?

    • Hand out grade sheets, graded assignments

  • All late assignments must be turned in by Friday, 10/21 (the end of the quarter)

    • Intro to chemical bonding

      • Atoms bond with other atoms ONLY to get a full outer shell (valence shell) of electrons <-- this is the most important idea in chemistry!

      • Atoms do this in 2 ways:

        • Transferring electrons (giving or taking electrons) - Ionic bonding

        • Sharing electrons - Covalent bonding

    • Ionic bonding

      • When atoms gain or lose electrons, they become charged and are called ions (hence ionic bonding)

      • We can predict how elements will bond with each other by drawing Bohr models of the elements involved, and moving electrons around until each atom has a full valence shell of electrons

      • Click the picture below to see an example of how we would solve a problem like this.
