Bell Ringer: Write the names for NiCl2, MgCl2, and OCl2.

    • Ionic and covalent naming review

      • Covalent (All elements are from right side of "stair step" on PT)

        • Write names of elements, changing right-most element's ending to -ide

        • Use prefixes to tell how many atoms of each element are present (don't use mono- with the first element, just leave off the prefix)

      • Ionic (One element from left of stair step, one from right on PT)

        • Write names of elements, changing right-most element's ending to -ide

        • No prefixes

        • If the left element is a transition metal (middle of table)

          • "Reverse the cross" to find the charge on the transition metal

          • Write the charge in parentheses (using roman numerals) after the name of the transition metal.

  • Bonding practice 2

      • Just write formulas for ionic side

      • Follow directions as written for covalent side
