    • Substitute teacher

  • If you can get computer and projector access today, my first preference is that you show part of a clip from "The Botany of Desire" available here: http://video.pbs.org/video/1283872815/ . Begin at time index 1:23:00 . Before you start the movie, try to get students to discuss a few reasons why diversity in a species would be important (for example, why it could be bad if all mice were white, if all people had the same immune systems, or if all apples had the same taste). This part of the video is about the potato and its diversity (or lack thereof).

  • Students began chapter 10 yesterday, and will continue today. Today you will be outlining chapter 10, section 2 with them (pages 263-269). Have everyone get an environmental science textbook and read individual paragraphs to them, or have them alternate reading for the class. After each paragraph, have them decide on a short way to summarize that paragraph, or pick out the most important thing from the paragraph, and write it down in their notes. Write on the board whatever they decide. Please use (and have them use) the section headings in the book to help organizer their notes (see example below)

  • Chapter 10, section 2: Biodiversity at risk

      • <important idea from 1st paragraph>

    • Current Extinctions

        • <important idea from 2nd paragraph>

      • Species prone to extinction

          • <important idea from 3rd paragraph>

          • <important idea from 4th paragraph>

    • How do humans cause extinctions?

  • Etc.

  • When you have all finished the notes, have students work on page 269: 1-6. This will be their homework if they do not finish in class.

  • If you start with the video, you probably will not finish much of the outlining. Please leave me a note letting me know how far you got
