Bell Ringer: What is a machine?

Chapter 13, section 1 notes

    • Work

      • To work, one must apply a force to an object over some distance.

      • W = F x d

      • Work is measured in Joules (J)

      • The force must be applied in the same direction as motion in order for work to be done.

    • Power

      • The rate at which work is done

      • P = W / t

      • Power is measured in Watts

    • Machines

      • Mechanical advantage is a measurement that describes how much a machine helps in terms of force

      • e.g. a mechanical advantage of 2 means that the machine puts out 2 times as much force as you put in. An MA of 3 means the machine puts out 3 times as much force as you put in.
