Bell Ringer: What is a machine?
Chapter 13, section 1 notes
Work
To work, one must apply a force to an object over some distance.
W = F x d
Work is measured in Joules (J)
The force must be applied in the same direction as motion in order for work to be done.
Power
The rate at which work is done
P = W / t
Power is measured in Watts
Machines
Mechanical advantage is a measurement that describes how much a machine helps in terms of force
e.g. a mechanical advantage of 2 means that the machine puts out 2 times as much force as you put in. An MA of 3 means the machine puts out 3 times as much force as you put in.
