Intro to chemical bonding
Atoms bond with other atoms ONLY to get a full outer shell (valence shell) of electrons <-- this is the most important idea in chemistry!
Atoms do this in 2 ways:
Transferring electrons (giving or taking electrons) - Ionic bonding
Sharing electrons - Covalent bonding
Ionic bonding
When atoms gain or lose electrons, they become charged and are called ions (hence ionic bonding)
We can predict how elements will bond with each other by drawing Bohr models of the elements involved, and moving electrons around until each atom has a full valence shell of electrons
